Social work is a large field with many possible career paths you might choose to take. A social worker could spend their days as a counselor or therapist, working in a welfare office, within a corrections facility, for a support agency, within schools or in child protection.
Social workers are problem solvers. They assess the social problems of an individual, family, school or community, and also analyze the ways available to help fix these problems. They then implement a plan to help bring about a solution, and follow up to help the process become smoother. As many of the issues that they deal with are of a very personal nature to their clients; confidentiality, empathy and interpersonal skills are an integral part of this role. For many people in crisis, you could be the help they desperately need. You may also have the chance to help some people through some of the most difficult parts of their lives. Every single day will bring a new challenge, but also many rewards.
As there are so many different job options within the social work field you will always find that there are ways to progress in your career. Also if one particular role stops becoming challenging there will always be another option available once you’re working full time. With the right experience there is quite a lot of opportunity for career advancement within the social work field.
